The Honorable Martin E. Smith, Esq. (Ret.) graduated from Niagara University in 1967 and Syracuse University College of Law in 1970.  He served in the Westchester County District Attorney's Office as an Assistant District Attorney and continued his career as a prosecutor in the Broome County District Attorney's Office until 1977.

Judge Smith continued his legal career in private practice as a partner in the law firm of Palmer, Hankin, Peyton and Smith and later in the law firm of Griffen & Smith.  During his 14-year career as a civil litigator, he tried numerous personal injury, wrongful death, contract and product liability cases in addition to construction contract disputes involving municipalities.  Also during this time, he served as an adjunct professor at Binghamton University teaching courses in Evidence, Business Law and Criminal Law.

In 1990, Judge Smith was elected to the bench as Broome County Court Judge.  He was Supervising Judge of the Criminal Courts for the 6th Judicial District covering 10 counties for the past 15 years.  As a County Court Judge, he presided over approximately 600 trials including over 40 murder trials.  In addition, he presided over several hundred criminal and civil appeals from municipality courts.  As an Acting Supreme Court Justice, Judge Smith also presided over several hundred civil cases.  He is the past President of the New York State County Court Judges Association and was also appointed to the Jury Reform Project and the Commission on the Future of Indigent Services for the State of New York by then Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, Judith Kaye.

Judge Smith retired from his position as Broome County Court Judge and acting Supreme Court Justice after 25 years of service.  He brings a wealth of legal experience and litigation expertise to our firm.  He is admitted to practice in New York State and is a member of the New York State Bar Association and Broome County Bar Association.
